Key Focus: Highlighting the journey of professional climber Brian Zarzuela as he competes in the 2024 US National Championship.
I was hired by Great Big Story, who is well known for producing captivating short films and documentaries. The London-based studio needed coverage of the US Paraclimbing National Championship, held just outside Washington, DC. The primary goal of the video was to highlight the inspiring journey of Brian Zarzuela, an exceptional professional athlete competing in the event.
Objectives:
The specific objectives of my contribution to this project were to:
Provide coverage of Brian Zarzuela's participation in the US National Championship.
Capture the essence of his journey, from warm-ups to his competition climbs, to create an engaging and inspirational story.
Implementation:
The project was implemented over two days of on-site filming at the competition:
Day 1: Focused on capturing Brian's warm-up sessions and his interactions with other competitors and coaches. This provided a behind-the-scenes look at his preparation and mindset before the competition.
Day 2: Filmed Brian's climbs during the competition, ensuring to capture the intensity, determination, and skill displayed throughout his performances.
Challenges and Solutions:
There were no significant challenges encountered during the project. The two days spent at the competition allowed ample time to follow Brian and document his journey thoroughly. This seamless process was facilitated by effective planning and clear communication with Brian, event organizers, and the London based producer.
Outcomes and Impact:
The final video, available on YouTube, has garnered hundreds of thousands of views, resonating deeply with viewers as an inspirational story of perseverance and athleticism. The project successfully highlighted Brian Zarzuela's remarkable achievements and showcased the growing popularity and significance of climbing as a competitive sport.

Lessons Learned:
This project displayed skills in the sports documentary genre and demonstrated an ability to deliver high-quality work while maintaining excellent communication with an overseas client.
This case study exemplifies my ability to capture compelling stories and produce content that inspires and engages a wide audience. Working with Great Big Story on this project was a rewarding experience, and it underscores a commitment to excellence in storytelling.
